Cranial Osteopathy compared to Chiropractic treatment.
How one chooses a healer is a mysterious thing. Forceful correction, or gentle? A quick treatment or a longer one? Correct the specific site of discomfort or address the totality-fingers to toes, bowels to nose? Every soul is unique, as each treatment should be. The following chart will be useful for information whether you're looking for a chiropractor in Los Angeles, Santa Monica or beyond. The rest will be up to you.

Cranial Osteopathy |
Chiropractic |
| Mode of treatment |
Hands-on. Hands are used to diagnose total body strains. Balanced forces are applied slowly, helping to remove trauma and restriction. These forces accentuate the body's healing efforts, resulting in rapid recovery. All body parts are addressed, including the head, arms, legs, and internal organs. Treatments take about 30 to 40 minutes. |
Hands-on. Hands are used to diagnose mostly spinal aberrations. Usually, high forces are applied quickly to "crack" or force vertebra into place. Treatment is usually limited to the spine and takes seconds to apply. |
| Training |
5 years minimum. Four years Osteopathic Medical School plus one to three years of a hospital residency. Throughout this training, students may complete hundreds to thousands of hands-on apprenticeship hours with expert Osteopaths. |
4 years Chiropractic College during which much anatomy and clinical sciences are learned and the manipulation of spinal mechanics is taught. |
| License |
DO's are granted a "Physicians and Surgeons Certificate, authorizing the use of any and all methods in the treatment of diseases, injuries, deformities or other physical or mental conditions of human beings." - Osteopathic Medical Board of California.
**Please note: U.S. DO's are fully licensed physicians. However, foreign DO's have different licensing requirements and may not be. |
"A duly licensed chiropractor may manipulate and adjust the spinal column and other joints of the human body and in the process thereof a chiropractor may manipulate the muscle and connective tissue related thereto." - California Board of Chiropractic Examiners on the scope of treatment. |
| History of creation |
Discovered by A.T. Still, MD in 1874. Eighteen years later, after countless cured and its theories proven, the first school of Osteopathy was founded in Kirksville, Missouri in 1892. Dr. Still reasoned that the body has the innate ability to heal and that restrictions in the tissues are but delays. Once those are removed, nature has no route but to deliver perfect health. Superb anatomical knowledge was the foundation. Tissue balancing was the method. The physician's hands were the tools. W.G. Sutherland, DO, under Still's direction, developed the cranial concept, detailing motion of the cranial bones and central nervous system and their role in underlying disease, from migraine to ear infections to seizure. Today, only Cranial Osteopaths practice these traditional methods. We make up less than two percent of all Osteopaths out there. |
Discovered by D.D. Palmer in 1895. Two years later, in 1897, the first Chiropractic College was founded in Davenport, Iowa, 200 miles from Kirksville. By his own account Mr. Palmer was a magnetic healer for 9 years before discovering that, in a client of his, a "subluxed" vertebrae cause deafness and that its correction restored it. Mr. Palmer believed that spinal segments, when out of place, interrupted effective nerve force from the spinal cord to organs and other tissues leading to disease. Therefore, forceful correction of spinal segments was developed as treatment. |
