The Surgeon I Stopped From Cutting
Six weeks to surgery. Six to seven millimeters, left sided herniated disk,
L5-S1. Desperate for an alternative to surgery, who does he seek? Who everyone seeks, at the end of their rope.
Pain killers, muscle relaxants, physical therapy. All failed. Acupuncture, two types of chiropractic. No help. I inspect details. MRI, symptoms. Doesn't look so good. Surgery may be necessary. But first, let us seek counsel from the body. Let the millennia of wisdom talk to us. Is there hope? What trauma has the system incurred? Is it capable of healing? Desirous?
I still remember the vitality. Not only willing, but bounding. Tremendous change, right there, happening underneath my fingertips, first treatment. I knew then that marked healing was inevitable. What I didn't know: Would enough progress be made to delay surgery?
"Alright, here's where we stand. I think you'll do well with Osteopathy. Can we prevent surgery? Don't know. But we have a few weeks, so if you're willing..."
Hesitantly cooperative and cautiously fearful, Daniel agrees.
We treat.
Four weeks later and surgery only days ahead, Daniel had gone from lying on his side, in agony, on the floor, in my waiting room, to walking in with a cane. With his strength improved, pain quieted, and resolve strengthened, Daniel decided to delay surgery two weeks. He did so well that he soon cancelled it. Eight months later, with surgery but a distant memory, Daniel walks on. He walks strong.
True disease, deep desire, and a skillful director.
Sometimes, the things that people tell us can't change, must. And the impossible becomes reality.
